Caney Valley High School Entry Addition
Caney Valley Unified School District | USD#436
Caney, Kansas
-
This project consisted of a secured entry/administration addition to the Caney Valley High School. This new addition serves as the school’s new main secured entry and bus dropoff area as well as the main office area. The addition was designed to define it clearly as the main entry and provide a new, modern look. The main façade consists of architectural red metal wall panels and a hard coat stucco finish (which provides for a more durable finish versus EFIS). Due to the curved nature of the building’s façade, traditional structural steel framing (columns, beams, and bar joists) was utilized to achieve the structure’s look. The roof consisted of a white TPO membrane. The interior finishes consisted of VCT tile, carpet tiles, suspended acoustic ceilings & painted walls. The district had recently completed a building energy upgrade of all mechanical & electrical systems, and the new addition was designed to connect to the new systems.

The USD 506 Auxiliary Gym is a 20,000SF building to house the district’s Basketball, Volleyball, and Wrestling activities. The gym was designed with one primary basketball court and two practice courts, along with two cross-court volleyball courts. The gym has a spectator capacity of 530 people. In addition to the main gym, the structure houses two locker rooms, a 1,000SF Band/Music Room, restrooms, and a concession stand.
The structure was designed with a single-slope pre-engineered metal building with prefinished metal panels on the exterior and a masonry veneer. The mixing of the exterior finishes added in breaking up the exterior of the building to create a more aesthetically pleasing structure.
